EIGRP (Extended Internal Gateway Routing Progocol)
could be used in a gateway, with or w/o firewalling.
That's a likely use. Another is in one of the Freesco
(or like) projects that are low-cost alternatives to
Cisco [Yea, I own some Cisco stock]).

RIP is still heavily used in Unix environments. It
broadcasts the subnets it knows how to reach about
every 30 seconds, but only to its immediate neighbors.
EIGRP, on the other hand, usually only broadcasts
when there is a change in its links (hence, known as a
link-state protocol). However, these broadcasts go as
far as the ping can see.

Cicso published a lot of good books. Our Community
Colleges offer routing/network certification classes
at very affordable prices!

Gene
CCNA (a rare chance to use the cert.)
