yes, debian is part of the competition.
neither redhat nor any individual company can garner the financial and
custom programming resources necessary to take Microsoft on, but the
moral of the story is the story of the turtle and the hare.
better to give credit where credit is due...both Microsoft & Redhat have
claimed a large success from little innovation and lots of good
strategic marketing.
Microsoft can create their own destiny by writing software, Redhat
depends entirely (or almost entirely) on the open source / free software
community.
Seems to me that we ought to applaud Redhat for turning a profit last
quarter...I think it is the only linux distro to actually go public and
make money thus far demonstrating that it is possible to make money
doing what they're doing.
