You need to link either the usb0 or usb1 tty ports to /dev/pilot.
On my Red Hat 8 system, it's:
ln -sf usb/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot

Also, if you haven't synced before, you'll need to press the hotsync
button on the device before initiating the sync on the desktop.
