Found this googling.

"It sounds like your SMTP server doesn't require (or do) SMTP AUTH. In
that case you need to tell Evolution not to attempt to authentication
when sending mail. Go to 'Mail Settings' and select your account for
edit. Then go to the 'Sending Mail' tab and de-select 'Server requires
authentication'."
