if I remember right, if you create an ext3 filesystem on a mounted
partition, it creates the .journal entry. if you create it on an
unmounted partition, it doesnt. I know Im runnning all ext3 that I
created on unmounted partions and I have no .journal files anywhere. This
might explain why you have the .journal for some but not all ext3
partiions.
