Which GNOME version? As a user or for a program? There are easy ways
to do this in GNOME 1.4, but unfortunately that is a 'bug' in 2.0
(should be fixed in 2.2).

In Redhat 8.0 (GNOME 2.0) you can just put a desktop file in
/usr/share/applications. I'd recommend stealing one there and modifying
it.
