You may want to look at the GIAC certifications
www.giac.org. I like
that you have to prove what you have learned by writing a paper and
taking 1 or more tests. I did go through the GSEC not too long ago and
was pretty good and the course gets revised all the time. Worth a look
and a good place to start. Good luck.

FYI I have one CISSP book I believe it is the most expensive book I have
ever bought just so you are aware of the cost.

As far as the price tag, my company can foot upto $5500/ year for
membership(s) and training. So, I am not concerned about that.
