Gray stripe of death and modem?

Subject: Gray stripe of death and modem?
It appears that these two are related because when I whistle into the phone
and cause an error to occur with the modem if the gray stripe is present it
suddenly goes away. Any ideas about what I could do to resolve the problem?
The gray screen of death hasn't recurred since the day I first reported it.
