losing my usb mouse during suspend

On my Dell Inspiron 4000 I can hit a key
combination to put the unit into "suspend" mode.
This works fine, and the unit goes down and comes
back fine -- except... the USB mouse I use never
comes back. So after a suspend, I'm left with
the mousepad. Does anyone know how to get
Mandrake 8.2 to see the mouse again? Or is this
just too much suspense for Mandrake? (sorry :)
