I think the <BS> stands for the backspace key.
But I'm not sure about using it. I don't have a
Red Hat machine available to me to test this on
right this moment, but I tried this on Mandrake
running ICEwm, and Ctl-Alt-BS logged me out of my
X session. I'm not sure if that's what this key
combination is normally supposed to do, but in
any case, here's a safe one you could use - as I
mentioned before, you can switch out of your X
session at any time by hitting Ctl-Alt-F1. This
should bring you to a fresh terminal screen where
you can log in and then have a look at the X log
file. You can perform other actions there, as
well, that can get you back into the X session,
like killing it (and X will then restart
automatically and drop you into the GUI logon
again).

You are seeing gray stripes on the screen when
this happens? I'd throw out a wild guess that
your video card driver is wrong - perhaps
incorrectly detected by the RH installer?
