I ran the text version of sndconfig and it worked fine. It still will not
detect the sound card and play anything (except the sound sample from
sndconfig.)

the author suggested that the gui version of sndconfig is broken and
that you should use text console and it would work.
Why not go to runlevel 3 and try running sndconfig as root from text
based console?
