For a Debian desktop system, I would recommend the Debian distribution.

Not much. Personally, I prefer KDE, but Gnome might be more of your cup
of tea. I recommend playing with both and deciding for yourself which
works best for you.

If you've got both installed, you should be able to run apps written for
either.

I haven't used Gnome much recently, but KDE used to be the more stable
choice.
