Wny not do ogg? ogg is a free, open standard. There are numerous clients
available, including winamp.

There's no nagging patent problem.

The 'free' use is only for clients. Also note there's no guarantee Thompson
won't change their minds, rather there is just the lack of publicly stated
intention to do so.
