Were those programs you tried of a particular type? IOW were they games or
office programs? Do certain types of programs have problems with WINE?
Are there any other software initiatives attempting winXX to linux ports?

Give it a try and report back with your findings.
I've had mixed results with Wine. Some programs work, some don't. Even
with those that do, there are often issues which make it less useful than
it could be.
