gnome , kde startup

after some more digging /etc/sysconfig/desktop should handle it.

DESKTOP="GNOME"

then both /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients and /etc/X11/prefdm will use that as
$PREFERRED, and start gnome-session and gdm respectively.
