Well when i ran debian i noticed that they add X to every runlevel 2 and up, so boot into runlevel 1 and remove whatever login manager you use from runlevel 2. Not sure where it is in debian anymore. But check /etc/init.d/ and /etc/rc2.d/(not sure on this one its been a while)
