Not sure if this will be of any use have you tried setting up wine on the linux box to see if you could get the sim from the other system to run. Just a thought.

At one time there was a presentation by a fellow going through Cisco
certification that had setup an environment and was willing to let others
use it and play and help anyone interested use Linux to study for Cisco
certs.
