Don't be too harsh. I was in his situation not too long ago, and I had the
same feeling. I _love_ designing/implementing systems, but ASU doesn't
exactly teach you how to do this. After being around all the superstars in
the free software community, it is easy to feel that you would simply fail
at a programming position. The key is to love what you do and work where
you can ease into the position.

Of course, maybe he really doesn't like programming, in which case it will
be awfully tough to get into systems design without being a "code monkey"
first.
