Subject: RE: CPU Temperature Monitoring & Limits
Man I hate to get started on this subject. I built a AthlonXP with the problem below:
"amd 2100+
asus a7v333
pc-3000 512mb cl 2.0 @2,2,2,5T
gforce 3 PNY (not a TI card)
4 ata/133 Maxtor 40g drives two are Raid level 0
volcano 7+ Heat sink fan 6500rpm/copper heat sink
4 intake fans three exit fans including power supply
350watt power supply.
latest bios 1007
artic silver goop
Processor runs at 1755mhz due to a factory overclock of 5mhz by Asus.
At any rate the box is fast, very fast, but my question is its running hot, and no mater what I have tried it still runs hot. Idle about 57°c and 63°c full load. The threshold for the Amd xp 2100+ is 90°c. so this is what I have done.
I have tried two different Asus a7v333 mobo, same temp readings, two different 2100+ processors, two different 350watt power supplies, i have tried the oem heat sink & fan that came with it and my volcano 7+ runs faster and cooler, still hot. tested my friends 1800+ and he ran in the 40s with my setup. My room Temp is about 80-82°F. I replaced all the fans in the chase with 2600rpm 80x80xwhatever fans, that supplies a little more airflow along with the power supply that has the extra fan in it. All my cables are tied off and out of the way for maximum air flow. But the damn thing runs hot. I'm reasonably sure that I'm not overclocking anything.
vcore 1.75
cpu/pcibus 133/33
cpu/mem raio 4:5"
After I did some research, Asus stands behind thier boards and said any temp below 70°c is fine. I'm still not to happy about my temp being in the 60s. But I have been running this computer for over a 4week and I have not had it crash yet, even after 8hours of compiling.
http://unixmafia.port5.com/news/00211001.html <--- this guy had the same problem just with an older board, and I have that board at it to runs at 60°c all the time.
Does anyone else run any asus mobo?

Subject: CPU Temperature Monitoring & Limits
Where can I find recommended CPU temperature limits for an AMD Duron? I
have the AMD Duron Processor 3 Technical Specification Sheets, and all
it says is "Maximum die temperature 90C." Recognizing there is a
thermal gradient between the CPU and the temperature sensor, does anyone
have any ideas what the maximum temperature I should experience for a
healthy PC? I have not found any concrete numbers on the 'Net.
I configured "sensors" yesterday, and wrote a script to log system load
and CPU temp over time, which results in this output:
06-17-2002 06:47:00 0.09 95.5°F TX: 271kbps RX: 150kbps
06-17-2002 06:48:00 0.19 96.1°F TX: 270kbps RX: 194kbps
06-17-2002 06:49:00 0.13 96.1°F TX: 271kbps RX: 185kbps
06-17-2002 06:50:01 0.21 96.1°F TX: 264kbps RX: 201kbps
06-17-2002 06:51:00 0.24 96.4°F TX: 201kbps RX: 240kbps
06-17-2002 06:52:00 0.37 97.2°F TX: 270kbps RX: 193kbps
06-17-2002 06:53:01 1.17 103.5°F TX: 272kbps RX: 176kbps
06-17-2002 06:54:00 0.76 105.3°F TX: 269kbps RX: 204kbps
06-17-2002 06:55:01 0.66 107.2°F TX: 259kbps RX: 209kbps
06-17-2002 06:56:01 0.84 110.1°F TX: 272kbps RX: 200kbps
06-17-2002 06:57:01 1.85 111.4°F TX: 270kbps RX: 177kbps
06-17-2002 06:58:01 1.62 112.3°F TX: 269kbps RX: 183kbps
06-17-2002 06:59:01 1.01 113.4°F TX: 220kbps RX: 218kbps
06-17-2002 07:00:02 0.81 113.7°F TX: 222kbps RX: 212kbps
(As you can see, I also incorporated tracking network traffic from a
previous thread as well. This script is located on my web site.)
I then ran the machine ragged playing an AVI movie in full-screen mode
for over 1.5 hours. The CPU temperature reached 127F and held steady.
I set my alarm at 129F and reset (hysteresis) at 127F. Do these sound
like reasonable values? Obviously, cooler is better, but I don't have
$200 for a liquid cooling system.
Thanks in advance.
George
