Subject: my GNOME panels are gone
Since I've been exploring GNOME in connection with the
work I've been doing, the last week or so I've made a
bunch of agreeable changes to my GNOME configuration,
which I use in preference to KDE.

I hadn't logged off or rebooted in a while, but
yesterday when I did, and logged back on, I found that
none of my panels started up. (I have four of them.)
Everything else seems to be working. The desktop itself
and Sawfish are both fine, including all the Sawfish
key bindings I've set. GNOME knows about my workspace
and viewport definitions. XEmacs is in my autostarts,
so I am able to get stuff done, move things to
viewports, etc. The only problem is neither my main
panel nor any of the three custom panels I've added
start.

One thing I dislike about GUIs like both GNOME and KDE
is that they try to hide things from users. This is
fine for most purposes, except for when things go
wrong. Then you have no idea where to look for traces
of the problem.

In this case I have no clue. Yet.
