Bash Scripting

bash doesn't, but notice the backticks ( ` ). Those say to run the command
in a subshell and return the output, which then gets assigned to the
variable.

You can also use the $() syntax, e.g.:

DATE=$( date +%d%b%Y-%H.%M )
