distutils/python & gnue

Been having one helluva time trying to get
gnue to run setup...it jkeeps complaining
about distutils not being installed.

I have Debian un 'testing', Python2.1 installed
and the script still chokes. I have downloaded distutils
package and the README states these utilities are already
included with P2.1.

Anyone care to give me a hand?
