You probably won't be able to build a PPC system from scratch like you can an
AMD or INTEL system. It will be a huge pain in the ass because almost
everything is controlled by Apple. Your best bet is to find a used system for
sale on the web. But that's not to say it cant be done... but your not going
to be going down to Fry's and building a custom system.

Also if you have enough money to spend on an Apple, you probably could build
a faster linux system based on an AMD or INTEL chipset. Plus there are a ton
more compatible parts.

The only reason I would install Linux on a PPC is if you already have an
Apple or have an old one sitting in the closet. I would not spend the money
to buy a new one just to run Linux.

Also applications wise, if your using any type of distribution with a package
manager, you're going to find more apps for the i386 base computer. And they
will likely run better because not allot of developers have access to PPC
systems so somethings don't allways work right.

I don't want to discourage you... but I wouldn't try and build a PPC unless
you all ready have a PPC System or are ready to spend big bucks... especially
when all your trying to do is run linux.
