Using apache for http, you can do either. If you don't have extra IPs, then
name bases virtual hosting works just fine.
For https you must have an IP per host name.
As long as you don't have part of your virtual hosting eating your machine
alive it shouldn't be a problem. It's fairly easy to do for the simple case.
