ARRRG segfault

I want to thank Hans, Julian M Catchen, and Kevin Buettner for thier
pointers to the memory allocation debugging and access tools. I did a
quick try with electric-fence and after about an hour found two nasty
bugs... So it looks like it works for the moment... I'm hear to tell,
you brothers and sisters, this code is SCARY!
