The install I did where the range is somewhat short to say the least was
betweeen a Linksys WAP and a Linksys PCMCIA wireless card. Could this be a
linksys wireless card misconfiguration issue. I remember using the signal
stength testing software with it and the signal would drop significantly
with a object in the way even at 3 ft.

I havn't found that to be the case; although I havn't finished my testing
yet. I have heard some of the anecdotal evidence about the linksys having
a short range, but I'm sure I buy it. I'm currently testing a bunch of
different wireless equipment to put actual numbers to these things, and I
havn't gotten far enough yet to say for sure. However, a few days ago, I
did manage to go almost a quarter mile using the linksys with the built in
antennas. (The other end of the connection was a laptop with an Orinoco
silver card.)
While there's a lot more testing to do, specifically when it comes to the
range of different APs, so far the preliminary numbers indicate that the
Linksys is about that same as the rest of them. Once I have some real
numbers to show one way or the other, the results will be posted on the
tempefreenet.org website.
