region of interest documentation

I'm looking for a general description (or documentation) of the format
and general use of the "region of interest" or the X windows property
string that allows you to encode the start position, width and height of
a window or image (generally of the form: AAAxBBB+sx-sy).

Anyone know of a URL off the top?
