Wrong. When I was shopping for my modem, several of the external ones used
the phrase winmodem. I also remember the original US Robotics winmodems cam
both internal and external.
The question I didn't ask is does the e-smith recognize the modem
automatically when booted? If so it is not a winmodem. If it doesn't, I
would look for another modem.

How can an external modem be a Winmodem?
Any external modem (on a serial port) basically uses
the Hayes-type protocol. Is USB different?
