I have both a install floppy, boot and rescue floppy from another
install. If I use the boot floopy, it can't mount the drive. Or should I
type linux init=/bin/sh at the boot prompt. Even then I wouldn't really
know what to look at.

I looked at both of these and I think this is definitely worth looking
at. I will try loading into the boot sector rather than the MBR. I'll
post the results. Very good detective work on the buzzword clues.

Okay, the CDROM is seen and seems to work okay.

I could try that but it was working okay until everything went south but
we did for sure have bad memory so I'm assuming so far that it came from
the memory.
