Thanks,

I am trying to track this through myself - I have had all along, the
cheap Xerox XK35c ink jet hooked to one of my Windows machine but I
really only use the LaserJet 4M which is connected to one of my linux
boxes since it spools fine for my linux machine, Macintosh machines &
Windows machines and I don't have to spend $250 for HP's over-priced
NIC.

It's obvious to me that the errors your listed here...you can try this:

cat /var/spool/lpd/HP5L/status.HP5L

and if you check this directory out...

ls -l /var/spool/lpd/HP5L

you will see a number of files including the file called script.cfg
which will have the user name/workgroup/ip address etc of the smbprint
connection.

I am having much the same issues as you but I am dealing with a printer
that I have little confidence is supported in any significant way by
open source...so prior to this moment, I have never tried.

I don't know if /etc/lpd.perms has governance here though I would think
that root has permission regardless.

Anyway, I am tired and going to bed but I have the same issues - will
post a query to enigma list and see if I can get mine going.
