Hmm, I wonder if you have used up all of your inodes? If you have lots and
lots of small files you can exhaust all of your inodes but still have lots
of free space left. This normally happens on news servers that have not been
formatted for extra inodes when the file system was built. It can happen on
any drive that has lots of small files though.

Use df -i to see the status of inodes on the partition. If you are out of
inodes you are stuck, have to backup and reformat the partition with more
inodes.
