XMMS couldn't open audio, but GTCD does

I am using Redhat 7.1 on Compaq Presario 1655 laptop. It plays all music CD well. But when I try to play mp3 using xmms, it comes out with the following warning

Couldn't open audio

Please check the following
1. You have the correct plugin selected
2. No other program is blocking the soundcard
3. soundacrd is configured correctly

For. 1. eSound Output plugin is selected. That was the default, I don't know what other ones I could select

2. No Nothing is palying

3. gtcd could play any cd. So, soundcard is configured correct.

Any help.
