I think you want

/dev/ttyS0

not

/dev/ttys0

Note the capital 'S' vs the lower case 's'.

Here's my system and it works fine (though I'm using JPilot not KPilot):

  dan@bart: /home/dan [284] -> ls -l /dev/tty[sS]0 /dev/pilot
  lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           10 Nov 18 14:03 /dev/pilot -> /de=
v/ttyS0
  crw-rw-rw-    1 root     uucp       4,  64 Jul 17  1994 /dev/ttyS0
  crw-rw-rw-    1 root     tty        3,  48 May 20  1996 /dev/ttys0
