Her answer was correct, normally. Use the init scripts. Most of the time the
quirks of the service have been accounted for.
If there's a reload option, e.g. bind, then it's better to use that if
you're just wanting to reread config files.
If init scripts do the wrong thing, then submit a bug report and get them
fixed at the distribution.
