Subject: NEWS: IBM makes $40 million open-source offer
Eclipse is a framework for making IDE's. It is being
developed by OTI under an open-source license and
forms the basis of IBM's Worksphere Studio Workbench.
It
aims at extensible and non-monolithic development tool
sets, with interfaces permitting colloboration between
those tools. Eclipse is a runtime kernel and a plug-in
architecture. The kernel provides facilities common to
all development environments - projects, workspace
resources, delta checkpointing, interfaces to
repositories.

Eclipse is Java-based as is being suported currently
on Linux (Motif) and Windows.
