xcdroast "failed to scan the SCSI-bus"

For redhat anyway. You can go into lilo.conf and edit the line
"hdd=ide-scsi" to "hdd=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi" then run lilo so it writes it
to disk. It was much easier than compiling a new kernel.
