In fairness to Richard, he lives in the UK where there is a vastly different health care system and probably a different licensing system. The UK part threw me in that I had the impression that this was a local Phoenix list and he did not mention in his post that he was referring to the UK's health care system.

Greetings,

Not meaning to fuel the fire, and having performed advanced research
on the Total Cost of Ownership of various server platforms, I am
intrigued by Richard's comments. Like Tom, I would like to see
some references to back them up.

My research indicates that for small workgroups (a stand-alone would
be a workgroup of one), Microsoft-based platforms are less expensive
than Unix (even Linux) based platforms. The admin labor (Windows
admins being cheaper than Unix admins) offsets the licensing cost
and productivity loss during unplanned outages.

George

That said, in my kids schools here in the Valley in the 90's, they had nothing but MAC's until high school then a few IBM's showed up but most of the teachers didn't know how to use anything but the mac's. Even in college at GCC there is still about half mac's in the lab. I can't speak for other countries, but here Apple is well known for it's free computers to schools program.
