A long time ago I helped a co-worker swap out a 540mb hard drive out of a M/75, and I seem to remember experiencing the same problem. If I remember correctly, someone suggested to us to set the jumper on the hard drive to Cable Select not Master or Slave. If the hard drive "auto parks" then the Precomp and LZ settings aren't really required.
Take this advice with a few thousand grains of salt as it was a long time and many many system upgrades ago.

The laptop asks for Cylinders, Heads, Sectors/Track, Writing Precomp and Landing Zone. IBM's web site only gives the first three. I've tried it with various settings for the last two, but I always get "Hard disk read failure" on post. Does anyone have an experience or suggestions for this that they could share? I'm stuck on it.
