gvim to the rescue ;-).
Another way to cheat is to stick 'em in web pages, then cut-and-paste.
That's how I used to get ü, etc. There was no point in learning how to get
them on the various computers and OSen I was using all over the place, so I
shoved in the bottom corner of my home page.
