Subject: DSL Modems and Code Red
Got a message today from Qwest stating that Cisco has come out with a
"permanent" fix for the 675 and 678 modems. This should take the CBOS of the
device to v2.4.3.

Subject: Urgent "Code Red" worm fix

August 31, 2001

To Our Valued Qwest DSL Subscriber:

Since we first became aware of its customer impact, Qwest has worked
closely with Cisco Systems, Inc. to alleviate problems caused by the
Code Red virus - also known as a "worm." Now, Cisco has made a
long-term solution available for affected customers who use either the
Cisco "675" or "678" modem. They've developed a software solution to
help protect your modem from the effects of this virus. You'll need to
install this software if you have a Cisco "675" or "678" modem - even
if you've already applied Cisco's "interim solution" for an earlier
version of the Code Red virus.

To determine if you have one of these modems, look for the word "Cisco"
and the numbers "675" or "678" on top of your modem. If you don't have
this modem, you don't need to take any action. But if you do, please
follow the steps below to apply the long-term solution - a new release
of software known as Cisco Broadband Operating System (CBOS) version
2.4.3.

First, determine if your modem is inoperable or "frozen" (the most
common symptom of the Code Red virus). If that's the case, you need to
reset your modem. Just:

Disconnect your DSL telephone line from the wall,
Unplug the modem from the electrical outlet,
Wait a few seconds for the connection to be completely severed,
Plug the DSL telephone line back into the wall,
Then, plug the modem back in. This should reset the modem.

Next, to expedite installation of the long-term solution, go to:
www.qwest.com and look for the blinking "Code Red Virus Alert" button.
Click on it and follow the instructions to install the long-term
solution. If you can't install the solution from the Web site, you can
get Cisco's long-term solution on a CD-ROM. You can request a CD-ROM by
sending Qwest an e-mail using the form at
http://www.qwest.com/dsl/coderedcd.html. You can also order the CD-ROM
by calling us at 1-800-390-6593.

If you have problems installing the new software, please contact our
technical support team at 1-866-814-8396.

At Qwest, we're committed to providing the highest level of support
possible to our valued DSL customers. We appreciate your patience and
apologize for any inconvenience caused by the Code Red virus.

Sincerely,

Murray Smith
Vice President of DSL
