This is a 'known problem' with at least one of the 2.4 Kernels. I don't
know if it is Red Hat specific, but I ran into it under RH 7.1 as well.
Kernel 2.4.6 or later fixes this (very annoying) problem. I downloaded
2.4.6 from
www.kernel.org, built it and was good to go.
