New to group

Im currently running a RedHat based machine, but almost all of my
learning took place under Slackware. It was only this year, in fact,
that I installed RH6.2.

And contrary to my original intentions, I find myself desiring to
install things from the source rather than from RPMs, so my machine is
again drifting from that "baseline" of what everyone else has.
