This stems from the Xerox PARC / Apple idea of the "paperless office"
where the background is white to imitate paper. All of which ignores the
fact that CRTs are far different, being transmitted instead of reflected
light; black text on white bkg is hard to read on a computer no matter
whether it "looks like" wysiwyg or not.

In other words, it's Marketing over Technical Reality.
