I don't know about Debian, in SuSE I use Sax and Sax2 to configure display,
which don't work always.
In that case, I would go to the screen section of /etc/X11/XF86Config and
make the first 'display' subsection to the color depth and resolution to
what I need.
It has always worked for me.
