We are pioneering the use of open source software in
configuring a print server at Mutoh America. The server
will be printed to from Windows and Macintosh clients.
The print server runs runs Red Hat Linux 7.1 with the
2.4.2-2 kernel. Samba and Netatalk will provide access
to the postscript printers. Telnet and ftp will be used
for adminisrative tasks, because there will be no keyboard
nor monitor on the box. The Red Hat installation will be
trimmed as much as possible.
=09
Currently, Red Hat has been installed, but not yet trimmed.
First we will get things to work.

Problem:
Telnet, ftp and smbclient invoked from a client
( trying to access the shares of the sever )
all refuse the connection. If any of the above
are invoked from the server itself ( to itself ),
the connection is made. /etc/hosts.allow is empty
( as is /etc/hosts.deny ). The entry "portmap:
ALL" was used in /etc/hosts.allow and did not work.
=09
What are the possible causes? Could it involve xinetd?
