Hello all,
Just wanted to say that Julian's advice worked, and I was finally able to get my DSL service working on my Mandrake box. It was
easy once I knew which software to use. I guess I'll write off my hassles with the PPPoE client as an educational experience. I
must say that it's easy to be mislead by postings you find on the Web, because they often don't have sufficient context to let you know
if they're applicable to your own situation.
I wasn't able to find the DHCP client software on my Mandrake RPM directory, so I downloaded the whole DHCP source tarball from
www.dhcp.org. It took a while to build on this old box, and about as long to figure out the rather confusing documentation. I read
the long man page on dhclient.conf, only to discover that for most applications, an empty configuration file will do! And it did.

Thanks again,
Vaughn
