MTU settingson ppp0

i have dsl and i just setup a linux router with ip
masq. in the /etc/ppp/options file i set the mtu to
1500. But when i dial up my connections it gets no
higher then 1492. Does anybody know how to fix this?
is it my hardware? please help!!!
