What version of sane are you using? Did you download the back-end - the umax
part. I am using sane 1.0.4. You have to go to the "supported scanners"
section, and click on the umax link. It will bring up the umax page for
sane. Download the backend there, and read the docs. It compiles really
easily (assuming you have the latest of Gimp), and runs without a hitch.
