Debian Network question

Hi,
I just loaded debian 2.2 for both ethernet and ppp dialup. I'd like to
know how to stop just the eth0. The /etc/init.d/networking script seems
to be all or nothing. Starts both lo and eth0 or stops both and I don't
really want to unplug the ethernet connector.
