What's the error you get? We need that to be helpful :).
In the meantime check your ulimit. Not usually a problem in Linux as the
default is unlimited, but it can be if you're sys_adm shrunk it or you ran
something like Bastille.
Also, try ncftp. It will continue from where the ftp died instead of
getting stuff from anew.
If you're behind a firewall you might not be properly proxying ftp, so you
have to use passive ftp. I think there's info on that in the ncftp
manpage.
